Dr. Brittany Chidley is a licensed psychologist and licensed marriage and family therapist who runs her own private practice, Trails Therapy, in San Diego. She's built her career on staying a generalist instead of niching down, working with grad students, healthcare professionals, entrepreneurs, and families rather than specializing in one area. In this episode, she talks with Ann Marie about why the standard advice to niche never fit how she works, and why the variety has kept her engaged after almost 30 years in the field.

The conversation moves into what it's actually taken to build and lead a team of therapists. Brittany shares one of her ongoing challenges as a leader: holding standards like punctuality while staying curious and empathetic about what might be going on for the people who work for her. She and Ann Marie compare notes on how they each approach hard conversations with their teams, and Brittany talks candidly about the parts of leadership that don't come naturally to her.

They also get into the harder logistical questions Brittany is still working through, like whether to keep taking insurance in a system that's asking more of therapists while compensating them less. Brittany shares what led her to start EI Corkboard, a free resource hub built to connect the community to emotional health resources and connect providers to each other, so that fewer people fall through the cracks looking for support.
