What To expect in individual therapy
-
Intake paperwork including where you’ve been, your current status, and where you’d like to go. We’ll establish goals together that make sense for you.
-
From your goals we’ll generate action items. Making change tends to invite insight and sometimes resistance. The work becomes moving through these layers and/or setting aside constructs that no longer serve you so that you can execute change with your whole heart.
-
Integration includes allowing the work to settle and seeing how it feels and moves through your mind, body, spirit. Maintenance becomes the intentional practice of tending to your goals on a daily basis. Slipping into default patterns and returning to your new insights and behaviors are all a part of the process.
What To expect in
couples therapy
-
Intake paperwork and an assessment from The Gottman Institute are the first steps. We’ll meet together as a couple, then in individual sessions, and return to a couples session to review strengths, room for growth and your roadmap forward. Specific goals you’d like to set will be created in conjunction with what the assessment bears.
-
The work is heavy on creating safety in our first few sessions so that when we get to approaching difficult things, we have the tools to communicate and support one another effectively. The work is bringing topics that align with your goals to each session and we’ll learn skills and develop insight about one another to support effective intervention. Feeling seen and heard, for both parties, is the crux of this stage.
-
We’ll continue with couples sessions, and break out into individuals as needed, to continue to the work of skill-building and insight. The byproduct is ideally feeling closer to your partner, repairing past rifts, creating solutions to current challenges, and doing so with respect and mutual appreciation. Sessions will decrease in frequency as you become more settled in your new patterns and insights. It’s normal to slip into old behaviors so we’ll attend these things that arise as you continue to shape where you want to be.
